Connected to the Mission of AAHGS–Surry NC

AAHGS–Surry NC works to research, document, and share African American history and family genealogy throughout Surry County and the surrounding region.

Developing the Historic Jones site as a cultural, educational, and heritage resource provides a natural extension of that work—connecting an important historic place with the stories, people, and communities it represents.

More Than 25 Years of Keeping Our History Alive

In the spring of 2000, a small group of individuals with personal and professional ties to Surry County gathered at the home of Dr. Evelyn Thompson in Mount Airy, North Carolina. They shared a common concern: that the stories, experiences, and contributions of African Americans in Surry County needed to be more fully documented, recognized, and shared.

At the suggestion of Winnie Merritt, the group recognized the need to formally organize their efforts. With unanimous support, the African American Historical & Genealogical Society of Surry County was established—creating an organization dedicated to ensuring that African American history and genealogy remain visible, accessible, and connected to the community.

AAHGS–Surry NC was founded in 2000 and incorporated as a North Carolina nonprofit corporation on January 22, 2002. The organization is recognized as a tax-exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

More than 25 years later, that commitment continues as AAHGS–Surry NC researches, documents, and shares African American history and genealogy while connecting present and future generations to the people, places, and stories that shaped our community.

Supporting the Jones School Legacy

More Than a Day of Golf

The Historic Jones School holds an important place in the story of African American education and community life in Surry County. Today, AAHGS–Surry NC is carrying that legacy forward by working to develop the historic site as a vibrant resource for history, education, genealogy, culture, and community.

Proceeds from the Jones School Project Golf Classic directly support the Jones School Project and help advance the broader work of AAHGS–Surry NC—researching and documenting African American history, sharing the stories of our community, expanding educational and cultural opportunities, and keeping this important history accessible for generations to come.

Every round played. Every sponsorship. Every contribution. It all helps move the legacy forward.
