Historic Jones Cultural Center
Connecting History, Culture & Community
The vision for the
Historic Jones Cultural Heritage Center builds upon the remarkable history of the J.J. Jones School and its enduring place in the life of the community.
Through the Center, AAHGS–Surry NC is working to carry the Jones School legacy forward by creating a welcoming place where people can explore African American history and genealogy, experience cultural heritage, engage in educational opportunities, and strengthen connections across families, communities, and generations.
Rooted in history and created with the future in mind, the Center will help ensure that the stories, people, and legacy of J.J. Jones remain visible, accessible, and meaningful for generations to come.

Honoring the Past. Connecting Generations. Inspiring the Future.
For generations, the J.J. Jones School brought people together through education, athletics, music, community programs, and shared experiences. It was more than a school—it was a place where relationships were built, traditions were shared, and community life flourished.
The vision for the Historic Jones Cultural Heritage Center carries that spirit forward, reimagining the historic site as a dynamic resource for learning, research, cultural heritage, storytelling, and community engagement.
As the Center develops, its programs and spaces are envisioned to support:
- African American History & Cultural Heritage
- Genealogy & Family-History Research
- Historical Interpretation
- Educational Programs & Workshops
- Exhibitions & Public History
- Community Meetings & Events
- Oral Histories & Storytelling
- Intergenerational Learning
The vision is to create a place where history is not only remembered, but explored, shared, experienced, and connected to the lives of present and future generations.
Where Our Mission Comes to Life
The work of the Historic Jones Cultural Heritage Center is deeply connected to the mission of AAHGS–Surry NC—to research, document, and share African American history and genealogy through education, cultural heritage, community engagement, and access to historical resources.
Developing the historic J.J. Jones School as a cultural, educational, genealogical, and community resource brings that mission to life in a meaningful way—connecting an important historic place with the people, stories, families, and communities it represents.
Through the Center, AAHGS–Surry NC can expand opportunities to learn from the past, engage with history, strengthen connections across generations, and keep African American history accessible for the future.
